PCR test

Direct virus detection of SARS-CoV-2 is possible using a PCR test. It is therefore the only reliable test to detect an acute infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. During this examination, a throat and nasal swab will be taken. Please note that direct virus detection using PCR is only ever a snapshot.

Rapid antigen test

Antigen tests can be used to identify people with active SARS-CoV-2 infection. The gold standard for detecting SARS-CoV-2 is RT-PCT and should be used to check positive antigen test results. Due to the lower sensitivity of antigen tests compared to RT-PCR, a negative antigen test result does not reliably rule out a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Antigen tests are only viable to a limited extent when it comes to the detection in asymptomatic patients but can contribute to the rapid and early identification of symptomatic or highly infectious patients.

A nasal swab is taken for the test.

Antibody determination

We use the CE-certified “Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S” test from Roche to determine antibodies. The test detects antibodies against the spike protein (S-lgG) of SARS-CoV-2 in a quantitative method. When looking at a natural course of infection, these are formed after roughly 3-4 weeks. The test is also suited to prove vaccination success and corresponds to the international WHO standard (NIBSC 20-136). We therefore provide the quantitative results in the WHO unit BAU/ml (Binding Antibody Units). A positive result measuring from 15 BAU/ml indicates the presence of neutralizing antibodies.

Our test for detecting neutralizing antibodies is in line with that of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer protection, thus falling under the “clear detection of neutralizing antibodies”.

A blood sample will be taken for this.

When does a Corona test make sense?

From a medical point of view, PCR testing makes sense if there is a suspicion of being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. This is especially true if you have symptoms such as fever, dry cough or shortness of breath and / or if you have had contact with a sick person or people from crisis areas. An active infection can still be determined with people who are (still) symptom-free – This helps determine whether the person tested is the virus carrier.

In the case of antibody testing, it should be emphasized again that this should only be carried out around 4 weeks after the first symptoms appear. Only then can one determine whether a Covid-19 infection with the coronavirus has already run its course. Any immunity is the subject of various studies.

If you suspect you might be infected with coronavirus, testing is only possible at the IHR LABOR 1220 location. Please come to the marked examination container at the parking lot behind the IHR LABOR 1220 building.
We ask that you protect other people; wear a face mask and do not enter the laboratory building!

If you have severe symptoms (such as high fever, cough, shortness of breath), please stay at home and call the hotline 1450 or your family doctor or ambulance 144 and follow the instructions given to you over the phone.

Special regulations

If you need a PCR test for approval for surgery and there is no justified suspicion of a Covid-19 infection, you can come to our IHR LABOR location after making an appointment by telephone. Please bring your medical confirmation with the date of the operation to the examination – In this case, a discounted special price applies.

If you only want an antibody test and not a throat and nasal swab and you have no symptoms, please come to our IHR LABOR location during the blood collection times. An appointment is not required for this.

Documents to bring with you

Please bring the following documents filled in and signed with you to the smear/or blood drawing:

Medical findings of the Corona tests

There are two ways to get your results for PCR and antibody tests: Depending on your request, we will either send them to you by post or you will receive an email as soon as the results can be downloaded from the online platform BefundPost.

The medical findings are usually made within 24-48 hours after the samples arrive at IHR LABOR 1220 [1].

If the test result is positive, IHR LABOR carries out the legally required EMS report.

It will take around 20 minutes to determine the results of your rapid antigen test. You will then receive the written report with your result either on site or you can download the report from the online platform BefundPost.

If the result of this rapid test is positive, we recommend performing a PCR test to check it’s validity.

[1] IHR LABOR is not obliged to provide services and / or comply with certain deadlines if it is not possible due to in particular – but not exclusively – technical defects or a lack of availability of given necessary capacities (e.g. reagents, devices, etc.) and these circumstances are not due to gross negligence on the part of IHR LABOR. The laboratory assumes no warranty, liability or guarantee in this regard.

When you make an appointment, please register for the digital download of your medical findings via BefundPost. All you have to do is provide your email address and sign a declaration of consent.

Pick-up notification
As soon as your medical report is ready, you will receive an email stating that your findings are available for download at If you do not receive an email notification within a few days, please check your spam / junk mail folder.

You will then be asked to change this password (i.e. the social security number) to your own personal password and to log in again using your personal password. Each subsequent login then takes place using your assigned username and your personally chosen password.

Retrieve findings
After logging in and confirming BefundPost’s General Terms and Conditions, you will be able to download and save your medical findings as a PDF. In the future, you can use this access to view all other test results from IHR LABOR. After the download, you can also permanently delete your findings if you so wish.

Note down login information
Please make a note of your username and your chosen password. Our tip: you will find an information sheet under the following link that will make it easier for you to log in and retreive your findings via BefundPost. A card is also pre-printed on this, in which you can write down your username and password of choice.
